Shawn Michael Bullock, Ph.D., P.Phys.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. It is, strictly speaking, a real factor in scientific research.”

(Einstein, 1931, p. 97)

Research Program
Dr. Bullock’s research focuses on the epistemological problem of how we learn from experience, with particular attention to how preservice and early-career science teachers learn from the problems and tensions they encounter in personal practice. Schön’s (1983) ideas about the nature of professional knowledge are of particular relevance to his research that explores connections between reflective practice, the history and philosophy of science, and science education. He is interested in how problems of learning science, problems of learning to teach science, and problems of learning to teach science using digital technologies interact with one other. Recently, Dr. Bullock has also adopted a historical approach to understanding how professional knowledge is constructed from experience, using the continuing education of Canadian engineers in the 20th century as a case study for analysis.
